MJ’s Horror Comedy Top 10

Sure, everyone’s making a top 10 list. Why can’t I? I make no bones about it, I love horror, I love badly made horror, I love comedy horror. So, here’s my top 10 horrorcom list.

10. Eight Legged Freaks (2002).

First, It’s a David Arquette staring role, so you know it’s already a bad movie. The whole movie felt like one huge middle finger to Arachnophobia. Hell, the best actor in this film was Doug E. Doug, as the conspiracy theorist disk jockey (and I don’t say that out of bias. I mean it was the ONLY good acting.) However, out of all the WHAT THE HELL moments, this was the topper.

9. Bad Taste (1987).

Imagine the scene. Peter Jackson is in the movie studio offices demanding to be funded for Lord of the Rings, to accomplish this feat, he makes the studio heads watch this over and over, until he’s given everything he wants. Seriously, I imagine this is how Peter Jackson gets work. Let’s face it, though, we all secretly love this movie. WE ARE ALL PAWNS IN PETER JACKSON’S SICK AND TWISTED GAMES!!!!

8. Return of the Living Dead (1985).

John Russo wrote this, and I’m sure this should have been higher. I wonder if Russo ever took this to Romero one night. I’m sure George loved the idea of his two masterpieces being mocked. However, yes. YES. YES. This, to me, is one of the greatest parody films of all time.

7. Evil Dead 2 (1987).

Oh, Ash. I’m glad to see you never took yourself seriously. Yes, Ash makes a headless corpse cut itself in half, and someone else chokes on an eyeball. It’s almost like the producers knew they couldn’t improve on Evil Dead, but the movie studio INSISTED on a damn sequel to the movie, so here’s their big screw you. No, Evil Dead 3 didn’t make the list, because that violated the Geneva Convention.

6. An American Werewolf in London (1981)

This is what happens when you take yourself TOO seriously. Griffin Dunne was comedic gold in this movie. He played such a great zombie, always taunting DavidĀ  at every turn. However, admit it, when David turned, you fell on the floor laughing at the over acting.

In the end, this is still a pretty awesome flick. It just puts me in tears laughing, every time I see it.

5. Braindead (aka Dead Alive) (1992)

Now, watch this and Bad Taste back to back, and EXPLAIN to me how this same man directed so many classic movies. If you like blood baths, this movie is for you. However, Peter Jackson nails the zombie spoof comedy genre. I MEAN, REALLY, THIS HAPPENED…THIS HAPPENED.

HE DESTROYED ZOMBIES WITH A LAWNMOWER. Try explaining THAT to the small engine repair store. How did the corroborator not clog?

4. Scary Movie (2000)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dktIVAfjzY

The Wayans Brothers did everything I was thinking about the best horror movies of the late 90’s. Roast the hell of out them. The first two were funny (yes, Scary Movie 2 is next on this list.) This one took the best elements of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream, and The Fifth Sense. I can still watch this and laugh hard.

3. Scary Movie 2 (2001)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCFZUZxBVuI

Sadly, this was the very last funny Scary Movie, the rest of the franchise is just the Wayans not even caring. Anna Faris is scream laughingly funny. Now, add in the Wayans, Tim Curry, Andy Richter, and JAMES FREAKIN WOODS, this movie was comedy gold. I can’t believe it’s been 14 years since this movie came out, and the jokes are still as funny today, as they were when I was a freshman in college.

2. Zombieland (2009)

Anyone got a twinkie? This movie teaches you everything you need to know about the zombie apocalypse. What can’t you say about this movie? It’s almost the perfect horror comedy. Well, it is, but a bias of mine put this at number two.

Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

If it’s not obvious what number 1 is, you need to have your head checked.

1. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

The bias? I think Simon Pegg is the greatest comedy actor that actually does comedy movies. Also, Nick Frost is very underrated. The evidence?

Oh yeah, did I mention that my 2nd favorite Queen song is in this movie?

Well, there you have it. My top 10 list.
